Chapter 34: Suffocating Silence

Junie always hated awkward silences.

A part of her knew it was irrational to hate them, especially since most of the time, it was her that was making it uncomfortable. She couldn’t seem to help herself. There was something suffocating about being around other people and all that could be heard was their breathing, or worse, her own erratic heartbeat.

Nothing compared to the tension that permeated the inside of Kian’s car after they left the restaurant, however. Junie tried to focus on the little sounds in the car like her mother shifting in the backseat or the whirring of the other cars around them. Doing so only seemed to amplify the lack of sound.
