Synopsis

Ren Lei is the fourth son of a minor noble family and the son of a concubine to boot. Being born a cripple, the only thing he has is beauty; beauty that caused him much suffering growing up in a house where no-one loved him.

As if that wasn't enough, he was about to be sold off in a political marriage to a woman who had everything he didn't, the Princess of the Ether Cloud City, full of not only beauty but with immense talent in profound cultivation.

Refusing to submit to his fate, as a final act of rebellion, in a desperate bit to retake what little control he had over his own life, he chooses to consume poison and commit suicide.

However, the fates are not so kind to those that would try to change it. He survives but suffers from a strange condition that causes his soul to separate from his body. As he slowly loses the constrains of a physical body, he is forced to look at himself more closely and recognise who he truly is. Not only must he struggle against the destiny devised for him but also his true nature: a calamity whose howl will wipe the slate of an era clean, ushering in a new dark age.

Review written at chapter 151. Slight spoilers ahead. This review is for people who might have stumbled upon this book but aren't sure about reading it because the synopsis doesn't really do a good job of conveying much about the actual story other than the premise. Plus I think this book deserves at least a try, so if you're reading this review, give it a try. Writing quality: Fantastic. The sentences flow together well and the paragraphs are broken down into digestible chunks that make it easy to read. Almost no grammatical errors. I have caught a few typos but like they are so few and far between that they won't really affect the reading experiences. Author does have a tendency of sometimes being very artsy with his wording and his explanations about the rules of cultivation tend to get complicated but most of the time, its clear and concise. The first thing I have to say is, do not judge the MC by the events of the first 5 chapters. He has a drastic personality chance after the initial events of the story, which is mostly setup for what is to follow. MC doesn't act like that for the entire rest of the story. The sudden change is jarring but it is indicated to be a part of the story that will later be explained. About MC: MC is a smart dude, as one of the other reviews put it, actually smart instead of author saying he's smart while he acts like dumba**. He isn't all knowing and makes mistakes but his thoughts are logical most of the time. Personality: Cold, calculating but can be caring, Doesn't blindly follow stuff like morals or justice, does whatever he wants but he has a good heart. In the story, he is depicted as someone capable of being incredibly kind and incredibly cruel. He isn't really bound by the confines of what other think is good or bad, it all depends on what he thinks. I'd say he's in the chaotic good alignment, we see him being more good than just evil but he is quite cruel to his enemies. Romance: The tags say romance and harem but they are very small parts of the story so far. They drive certain key events but most of the story is spent with the mc and he doesn't seem to focus a lot on romances. He makes it clear that he cares for the two harem members introduced thus far but neither romance nor harem is the focus of this story. Story structure: The story focuses almost entirely on the main character, Yun Lei. There are several abrupt setting changes that can be quite jarring but it all feels connected in the end. Often times, it feels like X thing suddenly happens to MC, he tries his best to adapt to that situation and suddenly, Y thing happens and he has to adjust to that. Author likes leaving several hints all over the story, forgetting about it for like 30 chapters and then connecting it back into the story somehow. For example, the personality thing that was almost never mentioned after chapter 3 gets brought up again in chapter 149. It all feels like it'll somehow fit back into the story, even the parts that appear less important. The story moves on slow, which if you have caught up, can be excruciating. Like for example, there is a battle that goes on for nearly 15 chapters. But the author's writing style keeps it interesting. Overall, I'd say this is one of the better books I've seen on this site. I won't say it 10/10, best book ever, but its at least 8/10 and very much a fun read. But its probably not for everyone.

I think the author puts it the best when he says that it is a slow burn. The writing quality is good, not many glaring mistakes and the story seems to be coming along nicely. For a first work, the author seems good enough, surely he'll improve as the story goes along. This seems like a gradual buildup kind of deal. I feel like the story has done a good job dodging a the cliches and so far, it seems like the MC isn't going to get a sudden cheat that will let him uncripple himself. Overall, I'd say, I recommend a read, at least.

The author says this is a first attempt writing, but without that knowledge I never would have guessed. The language is rich and detailed with good pace and interesting characters. The MC actions at the beginning were upsetting (I very much feel for his wife), but he is not beyond redemption. Overall a very interesting read! Great work!

Story moves on slowly but it's engaging. This is a typical xian xia in many senses of the word but atypical at the same time. It fiercely avoids cliche scenarios like "Courting death!" and no face slapping young masters from other families (even though the MC does slap his father's face). The author seems to care about his story and isn't just writing another lazy rehash of the same d*mn concepts we've seen 200 times. And the MC is actually smart. Like not the author says he's smart while he acts like an absolute dumb*ss smart but actually smart. Like you could agree with many of the things he said while thinking logically. I will say though that personally, I think this book need a little comedy but otherwise, I think this will be quite a decent book about 200 or 300 chaps in. Fighting, author! Totally give it a try before deciding whether this is for you or not.

I was actually surprised when I learned that this is the author’s first book. It’s a commendable job for a first time writer. Anyone can read it. Even those whose mother tongue isn’t English and are looking to improve their English like me. I really loved the part of the forest of the endless trees and hope the writer has planned to continue it later. The detail in the writing keeps me captured and the read is quite enjoyable.

This has to be the utmost underrated book ever! The grammar and English was perfect, with barely any mistakes. The sentence lengths were perfect, allowing for a smooth read. The mc also has a drastic character change/ development. It's satisfying to see him go from a pathetic loser to a powerful mc. I hundred percent recommend this book to other readers looking for a slow paced and smooth read. Good job Author and keep it up!

while i love the fact that the mc fell in love with a blind girl i hated the situation. especially the princess. it got so bad i couldn't continue reading. it's not my cup of tea at all but maybe someone else will enjoy this story.

Aghhh! I'm still on early chaps but I gotta say, this book is soooo gud! The grammar is oof! There aren't many mistakes to say and the writing is perfect. Not too simple to feel repetitive and not too hard to comprehend. And poor Ren... Arranged marriage eh TwT... but hey, at least she's a princess 🤷🏻‍♂️ xD. Anyway, adding this to library, gotta come back here huihuihui.
