The main characters have weaknesses and face emotional turmoil, and it doesn’t feel like everything just falls into place. The protagonists actually have to struggle, and sometimes bad things happened that they just couldn’t fix. The emotional and physical pain and victories felt almost like what you could feel facing your own struggles today - quite a feat and a key marker for a great sci-fi story.
